Performance Art Bergen (PAB) is happy to inform that the international performance art festival Between Sky & Sea will take place Saturday 30th of August 2014 between 13:00 and 19:00 o’clock. The festival is based outdoor, meaning the artworks of 13 artists will be presented to the audience in the landscape of Herdla. This year they are located in the former military area above Valen (former German military airport). There will be a visitors cafe serving simple food and drinks during the arrangement.
The artists are gathered for a week having the opportunity to work within the environment of the site. This year’s festival has the subtitle GIVEN PLACE. The phrase is inspired by the work of professor in literature Anniken Greve at the University of Tromsø. In her article COMMUNITY AND PLACE Greve is discussing some interesting aspects of place through the phrases GIVEN PLACE, MADE PLACE and LIVED PLACE using Aristotle's' philosophy and Irish poet Seamus Heaney in her argumentation/explanation.
This year we are collaborating with Polish In Situ Foundation. In Situ is running CONTEXTS: Festival of Epeheral Arts in Sokolovsko Poland. Their 4th edition takes place 25th till 29th of July-14.

Both our sites, Sokolovsko ( a beautiful village and former spa resort south-west in Poland) and Herdla, are loaded places, both when it comes to nature and culture, old and new history.
The respective festivals will have their own identity, but at the same time a substancial overlapping and understanding of a common theme or headline. In Situ and Sokolovsko will keep their ephemeral focus on several artistic fields: performance art, experimental music, site specific installations and experimental film and video screenings.
Between Sea & Sky, on their side, have a smaller volume and will focus on performance art in the specific landscape of Herdla. It is also important to make a platform for the artists to develop new site specific works for the festival day. Together with the individual work we also would emphasize the artists’ seminar. Here the artists will present their perspectives and input on the subject will be given by invited guest lecturers.

MAURICE BLOKBlok (f. 1979) sine arbeider er ofte tittelløse. En tittel kan fort ta bort oppmerksomheten fra hva verket er (eller kan være) - i seg selv.
Under studiene, der han fokuserte på skulptur, innså Blok at det som skjedde før verket endelig ble presentert var like viktig for ham som det ferdige objektet i seg selv. Som et resultat av dette startet Blok å gjøre mindre handlingseksperimenter for videokamera; noe som snart tok formen performancekunst. The works of Blok (b. 1979) are often not titled. A name can draw the attention away from what the piece is (or maybe could be) – in itself.
Whilst concentrating on sculpting, during his studies, he realized that what occurred before the work was presented was of as much more importance to him as the final piece itself. Subsequently, Blok started carrying out short experiments in front of a video camera; something that soon became close to what is called performance art. Soon after his work evolved into actual performances, involving setting up and carrying out "actions" that bear aesthetic results in front of physical audiences. Blok is constructing and deconstructing whilst having some kind of interaction with audience, (or not). His performances have been showed in a wide range of festivals throughout Europa. |
CARPENTER + LONGVA Longva + Carpenter er et samarbeid mellom den norske video- og performancekunstneren Terese Longva og den amerikanske performance- og installasjonskunstneren Laurel Jay Carpenter. Duoen ble dannet i 2010. Longva+Carpenter er interessert i sted, det vedvarende og konsentrert handling.
Ved bruk av visuelle og estiske gjentakelser undersøker Longva + Carpenter forskjellighetens konflikt og styrke. De deler også kjærligheten til materialstudie og skulpturelt rom. Prosessene forankres i den visuelle kunsttradisjonen, der målet er å skape konsentrasjon for handlinger til det bestemte stedet. I performancene som gjerne strekker seg over mange timer, gis det mulighet for kunstnerne til å variere opplevelsen av intimitet og intensitet i tilstedeværelsen. I 2013 produserte duoen et verk spesielt for Festspillene i Bergen, vist på Torgalmenningen. Terese Longva (f. 1976) er utdannet både innen glass- og performancekunst. Denne høsten begynner hun sine MA studier ved Kunst og designhøgskolen i Bergen etter flere år som praktiserende kunstner. Laurel J. Carpenter (f.1968) arbeider som førsteamanuensis ved Alfred University, New York State. Hun har vist i arbeidene sine i gallerier og på festivaler i USA og Europa i mer enn 15 år. Founded in 2010, Longva+Carpenter is a collaborative partnership with Norwegian video/performance artist Terese Longva and US performance/installation artist Laurel Jay Carpenter. As interdisciplinary artists, Longva+Carpenter share interests in site, duration and the accumulation of action.
Employing visual and gestural reiteration, Longva + Carpenter examine the struggle and strength of difference. They share a keen interest in material study and sculptural space, grounding their process in a tradition of visual art, to create heightened sites for specific and direct actions. In performance, singular focus over a length of many hours allows them to change the space with both an intimacy and intensity of presence. In -13 the duo made a public commission for Festspillene i Bergen (Bergen International Music Festival). Terese Longva (b. 1976) is trained both within glass and performance. This autumn she starts her MA studies at Bergen Academy of Art and Design after several years as practicing artist. Laurel J. Carpenter (1968) is working as associated professor at Alfred University, New York State. She has showed in numerous galleries and festivals in USA and Europe for more than 15 years. |
BENEDICTE CLEMENTSEN Clementsen (f. 1986) bor og arbeider i Bergen. Med sin base i tidsbaserte medier utvikles verker for et variert spekter av steder, ofte responderende til omgivelsene. Clementsen skaper verk som uten å konkludere åpner opp for refleksjoner og assosiasjoner hos betrakteren. Arbeidene er estetiske i karakter, men tvetydige i sitt budskap. Clementsens kunstnerskap kretser omkring ontologiske og metafysiske spørsmål og denne forankringen preger alle hennes verk, uavhengig av det konkrete prosjektets konsept.
Clementsen avla sin BA-eksamen ved Kunst og Designhøgskolen i Bergen denne våren og har vist sine arbeid på festivaler og gallerier i inn- og utland parallelt med studiene. Hun var medstifter og medlem av styret for Performance Art Bergen, for å styrke og fremme visuell performancekunst og kunstnere lokalt, nasjonalt og internasjonalt. www.benedicteclementsen.com Benedicte Clementsen (b.1986) is a visual artist, living and working in Bergen, Norway. With her base in time based mediums, she works with a wide range of mediums such as performance, video, sound and installation. Clementsen creates works for a various spectrum of places and tend to work context specific. Her works are visual and aesthetic in character and can be read as abstract anecdotes or metaphors that attempt to convey a recognizable atmosphere. She is curiously concerned with ontology and wants to explore the human tendencies related to uncertainty, fragility and sensitivity. May 2014 she finished her bachelor degree at Bergen Academy of Art and Design, Fine Art department. SANDRA JOHNSTONJohnston (f. 1968) lager performanceverk som forvrenger tid ved å ryste den vanlige, hektiske overflatekommunikasjonen som fyller hverdagene våre. Hun gjør dette med en smertefull økonomi i bevegelser og en overveldende konsentrasjon som mål i verket. Hennes dybde i nærværet skaper en stille spenning som holder tilbake en flodbølge av dystre og forstyrrende bilder. Å overvære hennes langvarige performanceverk kan endre måten en tilskuer tenker, føler og puster.
Sandra er fra Nord-Irland, og bærer arr og traumer av sin historie, en hard virkelighet som benekter alle følelser og overbærenhet. Men noe av atmosfæren og isolasjonen er alltid til stede i hvert nye arbeidet hun gjør. Dette selv om hver enkelt performance er skapt og skreddersydd for det spesifikke stedet og rommet i landet som har bestilt verket. Johnston underviser ved Northumbria University, Newcastle og har en PhD grad i performancekunst. Johnston (b. 1968) makes performances that distort time by shocking away the usual hectic surplus chatter that fills our lives. She does this with a painful economy of movement and an overwhelming concentration of purpose. Her haunting presence creates a silent tension that holds back a tidal wave of bleak and disturbing images. Witnessing her durational works can change the way an audience thinks, feels and breathes. Sandra is from Northern Ireland and bears the scars and traumas of its history with a stealthy reality that denies all sentiment and indulgence. But something of the atmosphere and isolation is always present in each new work she makes, even though each individual performance is invented, fashioned and tuned to the specifics of the room and country that has commissioned it. JOLANTA KRUKOWSKA
Krukowska (f.1950) har vært medlem av Akademia Ruchu siden 1972, da gruppen ble stiftet. Akademia Ruchu er et teater med visuell fortellerstemme, de bruker et visuelt språk som har oppstått på scenen så vel som i andre typer offentlige rom i Europa, Nord- og Sør-Amerika og Asia. KAREN KIPPHOFFKipphoff (f. 1958) jobber som professor ved Høgskolen i Østfold, Akademi for scenekunst hvor hun underviser i scenografi. Før det var hun professor ved Kunst og designhøgskolen i Bergen i tolv år hvor hun underviste i performancekunst. Hun har hatt en rekke utstillinger og forestillinger i Köln, Hongkong, Plymouth, Novij Sad, Hamburg, Timisoara, Wien, Stockholm, Oslo, Berlin, Jerusalem, Bukarest, Bergen, Lassy og Montreal. Hun var også en av fem stiftere av foreningen Performance Art Bergen (PAB) i 2011. Deler av hennes arbeid har vært konsentrert om dukken som sceneobjekt: ulike avstøpninger i polyuretan, epoxy, gips og bronse av prototypen i tre har deltatt i hennes performanceverk.
Kipphoff (b. 1958) is working as professor at Østfold University College, Dept of Norwegian Theater Academy; where she teaches scenography. Before that she was a professor at Bergen Academy of Art and Design for twelve years teaching performance art. She has showed exhibitions and performances in Köln, Hongkong, Plymouth, Novij Sad, Hamburg, Timisoara, Vienna, Stockholm, Oslo, Berlin, Jerusalem, Bucharest, Bergen, Iassy and Montreal. She also was one of five founders of Performance Art Bergen in 2011. As an artist, his stance is an inclusive, pluralist and interdisciplinary position, which often, though not exclusively involves a contextual, ephemeral and/or participatory approach.
Launder on his relation to sculpture, installation and performance: “..in my own work I am usually more motivated by the over-laps, the interactivity, interconnectivity potentials and latencies when they are in close proximity/dialogue; this push-pull creates a constant need for reassessment and reappraisal: can an installation be staged? performed into? have works extracted from? (sculptures, photographs) be completed - live? be destroyed - live (or on video - a health and safety question)? can a photograph be a sculpture, an installation?” Launder (b. 1953) is artist and part-time professor at Bergen Academy of Art and Design (KHIB) and spend his time between London, Bergen and Cecilia, Italy. JAN MIODUSZEWSKIMioduszewski (f. 1974) er utdannet ved det statlige akademiet for billedkunst i Lodz, 1994-1996 (BA grad) og kunstakademiet i Warszawa, 1996-1999 (MA grad). Han arbeider nå på kunstakademiet i Warszawa hvor han har samarbeidet med professor Jacek Dyrzyński i hans ”Studio of Visual Actions and Structures”, siden 2001. Siden 2002 har han signert alle sine visninger som FURNITURE FACTORY. Hans uttrykk ligger i spennet mellom handling og maleri, ofte via tredimensjonalt objekt.
Mioduszewski har produsert flere separatutstillinger og solo-opptredener i Polen. Han har også deltatt i mange gruppeutstillinger og festivaler i utlandet. Jan Mioduszewski's performance art is inseparable from other areas of his artistic activity. Active in the field of painting, objects and installation, the artists labels his output with his artistic trade mark Furniture Factory (Fabryka Mebli) since 2002. Mioduszewski starts a discussion on tradition of mimesis in art – his furniture-paintings are representations of real pieces of furniture confronting illusion with reality. His specific trap situations reveal the mechanisms of perception. Mioduszewski is particularly interested in object, especially a utilitarian one. Thus, most of his performances are still performances in which the artist seems to aim at artistic mimicry. He turns himself into a sculpture – a motionless figure – or, matches his surroundings by means of his costume, sitting, lying or penetrating the object in the background. The artist often uses his body as part of a whole. This act, at the same time, enhances the impact of the paintings and objects staying in a close relationship, and points to the dialogue between body and object. Mioduszewski performed only several actions using the concepts of time and sequence of events. What he was interested in were the loops of movement or the performative practice of setting his painting and installation in motion. Mioduszewski's actions are often characteristic for perversity, sense of humour and self-irony. |
SIGMUND SKARDSkard (f. 1952) arbeider med nye holdninger og aspekter vedrørende vårt daglige miljø. Crossoveruttrykk og en blanding av materialer er ofte nedfelt i verkene hans. Primært tar de form av skulptur/performance eller som dokumentasjon av flyktige hendelse i form av foto og video. Arbeidene diskuterer menneskelige forhold som hvilke funksjoner virker og hvilke svikter. Økologiske perspektiver og humoristiske elementer er ofte til stede i Skards produksjon.
Skard (b. 1952) is dealing with new attitudes and aspects concerning our everyday environment. Crossover and a mixture of techniques are often embodied in his art works. Primarily they come out as sculpture/performance or as documentation in form of photo and video showing ephemeral actions. The works discusses human conditions as for what functions and what fails. Ecological perspectives and humour elements are often present in Skard’s production. |
PAULINA ZIELINSKAZielinska utforsker egenskaper og kvaliteter av sang som et grunnleggende verktøy for kommunikasjon så vel som en kilde til kreativitet i seg selv. Hun improviserer og eksperimenter. Stemmen, sammen med feltopptak av lyd, er hennes materiale for å skape performanceverk som handler om hvordan tid utfolder seg romlig. Hun vandrer gjennom byer, skoger, sumper og andre områder; hun lytter med stor oppmerksomhet og tar opp lydene. Foruten hennes soloperformancer, komponerer hun musikk for teater, utstillinger, i samarbeid med ulike kunstnere i forskjellige konstellasjoner og holder workshops i arkaisk øst-europeiske sang.
Zielinska explores the properties and qualities of singing as a basic tool for communication as well as a source of creativity itself. She improvises and experiments. Her voice, as well as fieldrecording-based samples, is her means to create performances that are situated around the questions of temporality in space. She wanders through cities, forests, swamps and many other areas to listen carefully and record. Besides her solo performance-work, she composes music for theatre, exhibitions, in collaboration with various artists in diverse constellations and leads workshops in archaic eastern-european singing. KAMOJI + WARSZAWAKoji Kamoji (f. 1935) er en japansk kunstner med buddhistisk og shintoistisk bakgrunn. Noah Warszaw (f. 1947) er en polsk maler som forsøker å transcendere egen kultur i møte og utforsking av fremmede kulturer og tradisjoner. Begge kunstnere har hatt en konsekvent praksis gjennom flere tiår. Deres første samarbeid skjedde i 2011 ved Museum Berlin.
Kamoji er utdannet maler og installasjonskunstner. Han skaper subtile og meditative romlige konstellasjoner som griper inn i det eksisterende stedet. Han ble uteksaminert fra Musashino Kunst University i Tokyo. I 1959 kom han til Polen for å fortsette sine studier ved kunstakademiet i Warszawa. Fra-70tallet har romlige undersøkelser og installasjoner vært senter i hans kunstnerskap. Han er interessert i den klassiske egyptiske, kinesiske, japanske og europeiske kunstens uforanderlig karakter, snarere enn samtidskunst. Han nærmer seg sitt kunstneriske arbeid ved å skrive et dikt eller et lite musikkstykke, og prøver å tilstrebe enkelhet. Kamoji 's kunst har vært utstilt i flere viktige museer og gallerier i Europa. Koji Kamoji (b. 1935) is a Japanese artist brought up in Buddhist and Shintoist tradition. Noah Warsaw (b. 1947) is a Polish artist exploring cultures and traditions foreign to his background, attempting at transcending it. Practices of both artists have been consistent throughout decades. Their first collaboration happened in 2011 at Museum Berlin. Kamoji is trained a painter and installation artist. He is creating subtle and meditative spatial arrangements, also intervening into existing places. He graduated from the Musashino Fine Art University in Tokyo. In 1959, he came to Poland to continue his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. From the -70’s spatial works and installations have been significant parts of his oeuvre. He is interested in the ancient Egyptian, Chinese, Japanese and European art and their unchanging factor, rather than contemporary art. He approaches his works through writing a poem or a little music piece, striving at simplicity. Kamoji’s works have been exhibited in several important museums and galleries troughout Europe. In the 90s Warsaw he resigned from participating in an international art market and explored individually the territory of invisible realities (a contaminated zone after the Chernobyl catastrophe). He continued to verify his creative potential by intense intellectual training in the realm of industrial innovations. He returned to fine arts and since 2004 he has performed worldwide at underground art scene under the name of Noah Warsaw. |
MALGORZATA SADY (curator)
Małgorzata Sady enjoys exploring different creative areas. She works with text, sound and images (writes, photographs, creates soundscapes, takes photographs, paints, makes films). She is a curator and participant of exhibitions and art events/festivals internationally (Canada, Ireland, Switzerland, Japan, Australia, UK, Sweden, Israel, Russia, Ukraine, Lithuania, Germany). She has collaborated with the Quay Brothers and Koji Kamoji. With M.Giżycki she realized a documentary “Alfred Schreyer from Drohobycz”. For many years she has promoted the work of Franciszka and Stefan Themerson. She is a translator of numerous texts on contemporary art, literature (poetry and prose – J.Czechowicz, S.Themerson), philosophy (L.Wittgenstein, B.Russell, J.Krishnamurti). From the late 70ies she has collaborated with art centres at home and abroad.

RITA MARHAUG (curator)
Rita Marhaug is a visual artist, born in Bergen, Norway in -65. She holds an MA in fine art from Bergen Academy of Art and Design, KHIB (-89) and a BA in history of art from the University of Bergen, UiB (-96). Until August -13 she worked as professor at KHIB, Dept of Fine Art. Since the early -90's she has participated in a great numbers of solo- and group exhibitions and performance festivals both in Norway and internationally. Important tools of expression are printmaking, drawings, photo, artist books, video and performance. Important in her art practice is also initiating and organizing art events. She has served on several boards locally and nationally. From May -14, she is the artistic director of Performance Art Bergen (PAB). This is the fourth time she organizes Between Sky & Sea.
